What is private selling? | Why buy privately?

Selling your home privately

Selling your home privately without an estate agent is not a new concept. There is nothing to stop anyone selling their home themselves and over the years many homeowners have benefited from the advantages of selling privately. The arrival of the Internet has simplified the task of selling privately to the point where it has become the preferred option for many homeowners. It enables sellers to take control of the sale of their home whilst saving huge sums in estate agent's fees

What are the differences when selling privately?

The only real difference when selling privately is that the seller handles the marketing of their home, including viewings, and agrees the sale directly with the purchaser, although this could be handled by a solicitor if preferred. Once a sale has been agreed both parties can refer the matter to their respective solicitor or conveyancer who will then draw up contracts and complete the sale.

As the seller you are likely to be responsible for some or all of the following:
  • Accurately collating your property details. This should include photographs and a description of your property as a minimum and may include dimensions & descriptions of all rooms, floor plans & video tours
  • Advertising your property including uploading your details to your selected PPSA member's website.
  • Setting the asking price – see FAQ's
  • Dealing with enquiries from buyers
  • Conducting viewings of your property
  • Agreeing the sale price for your property with your purchaser
The experience of many private sellers has indicated that buyers actually prefer to deal directly with sellers. Buyers find the process easier, less frustrating and receive better answers to any questions they have about the property.

The advantages of selling privately
  • You are in complete control of the sale and know what is happening every step of the way

  • You save thousands of pounds by not paying estate agent fees

  • You are the best person to sell your property and so are more likely to make a sale
